Dozens of Indian workers have been trapped in a collapsed highway tunnel for a week. They are supplied with oxygen, medicine, food and water through existing pipes. The rescuers are also in contact with the buried, but their voices are becoming weaker. The rescue work has now been temporarily interrupted.
An oil rig flown in specially from the capital New Delhi stopped working on Friday afternoon after a loud bang was heard in the tunnel, news agency PTI reported on Saturday, citing authorities. The noise caused panic among rescuers.
When work stopped, the machine had already drilled approximately 24 meters through the rubble. Experts looked for other ways to save the workers. A second powerful drill from the city of Indore is already on its way to the accident site, but is not yet in use, Indian media reported on Saturday. The ‘India Today’ newspaper reported that the possibility of vertical drilling from the top of the mountain is also being investigated.
The despair of the relatives is increasing
While family members initially hoped for a quick rescue, their desperation is now increasing, PTI reports. The prisoners’ voices grew fainter by the hour. Authorities announced on Saturday that they would provide housing, food and medical care for waiting relatives, news agency ANI reported.
