Fire brigade as rescuer – woman and children fell with their car into the angry Gurk

Date:

A 46-year-old woman from the St. Veit district actually wanted to go shopping on a farm when she suddenly heard the screams of her two daughters – the trip turned into a nightmare!

The Carinthian woman and her daughters (9 and 10) drove to a farm in the municipality of Mölbling on Saturday evening around 6:30 PM to pick up groceries. “According to her, she left the engine running and put it in neutral before getting out of the vehicle,” a police officer said.

Suddenly she heard her two daughters screaming; She immediately ran back to her vehicle! The car and her children rolled slowly towards a steep embankment. To save the girls, the woman got into the car, but was unable to stop it in time.

Fell over a dike in Gurk
“The car eventually rolled over a 20 meter long dike and drove into the Gurk River. “The vehicle and its three occupants then drifted approximately 30 meters away,” said an official, describing the anxious minutes. Because the doors of the car could not open; the family was locked inside. “Fortunately, the mother was able to start the rescue chain with her mobile phone,” says Markus Zuschnig, deputy commander of the FF Althofen.

The fire brigades Meiselding, Althofen, St. Veit and Thalsdorf, as well as the diving water service of the Carinthian State Fire Brigade Association, the Austrian Water Rescue Service and the professional fire brigade of Klagenfurt were warned. When the fire brigade arrived, the car was in the middle of the Gurk River. The concerned father, who had rushed to the scene of the accident, stood by the car in the Gurk and reassured his family. Fortunately, the initial investigation revealed that the family was unharmed.

Hypothermia and slightly injured
Firefighters immediately entered the Gurk River on a leash and well equipped. They secured the vehicle to prevent further drifting. “The father was actively involved in the subsequent rescue efforts. “With the help of the FF St. Veit crane vehicle, the car was pulled to the edge of the bank,” the fire brigade said. The family was eventually able to get out of the vehicle safely through the trunk. The Red Cross, which was also on site with a large contingent, provided initial care and took the hypothermic and slightly injured family to the Friesach Hospital for further checks. Fortunately, the assistance of other dive water service personnel was not required.
