The Ulawun volcano has erupted in Papua New Guinea. The Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC) in Darwin, Australia reported on Monday that the ash cloud had reached a height of more than 15,000 meters.
Japan’s Kyodo news agency, citing the state meteorological agency, wrote that the eruption could potentially trigger a tsunami that would also reach Japan. There was initially no tsunami warning.
The volcano erupted in the afternoon (local time). Ulawun is a 2,300 meter high stratovolcano on the island of New Britain. The Feuerberg is part of a whole group of volcanoes in the region.
Thousands killed in 1970 eruption
Beginning in 1970, several major eruptions caused violent lava flows and fiery avalanches. More than 1,000 people were killed. Ulawun was also extremely active in 2019, with volcanic ash rising to around 16,700 meters and also contaminating drinking water.
Papua New Guinea is located in the southwestern Pacific Ocean and includes the eastern half of the island of New Guinea and several offshore islands. New Britain is located in the Bismarck Archipelago, north of Australia. Ulawun is the highest mountain on the island, where approximately 500,000 people live.
