Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has warned his country’s military leaders against entering politics. General Valeriy Zalushnyj is already seen as a competitor for the incumbent president in the upcoming elections. However, the current martial law still rules out all elections.
In times of war there can be no discussion about hierarchies, Zelensky said on Tuesday. “With all due respect to General Saluzhny and all commanders who are on the battlefield, there is an absolute understanding of the hierarchy and that is it, and there cannot be two, three, four, five,” he explained. He warned Saluschnyj against entering politics. “If you go to war with the idea that tomorrow you will participate in politics or elections, then you behave in your words and at the front like a politician and not like a soldier,” Zelensky told the British tabloid The Sun. That would be a big mistake.
General: Stalemate with Russia
There has been speculation in Ukraine for months about a conflict between army leader Salushny and Zelensky. The general is already seen as a challenger to the Ukrainian head of state. According to the constitution, presidential elections must take place on March 31 next year. However, it is doubtful that this will happen. Martial law even precludes regular elections.
At the beginning of November, Saluschnyj warned in the British ‘Economist’ of a stalemate in the war with Russia (see video above). Zelensky, on the other hand, denied the standstill and emphasized the successes of the Ukrainian counter-offensive that began in June. The war has already lasted almost 21 months.
