The driver of a broken-down van drove into the parking lot of a furniture store in Frastanz, Vorarlberg, on Tuesday. There he was just able to escape from the smoke-filled vehicle.
An engine fire in a pick-up truck led to a large-scale action by police, rescue and fire services in a shopping center in Frastanz (Feldkirch district) on Tuesday afternoon. Shortly after the 70-year-old driver parked the vehicle, which was already heavily smoked, in the parking lot, large flames erupted from the engine compartment and set two other cars on fire, state police headquarters said. The furniture store and a gas station were evacuated.
Fire extinguished in time
The L190, Feldkircher Straße, was also closed during the fire-fighting and cleaning work. The driver was driving through this when he noticed smoke and loss of engine power and pulled into the parking lot. According to police, the man was able to get out of the taxi just in time before the car caught fire. The fire brigade was able to extinguish the fire before the flames spread to the immediately adjacent shop building.
Numerous emergency services on site
The fire was reported at 3:14 p.m. The fire brigade was present with 25 people and four vehicles, the rescue service with two vehicles and four people, the police with nine vehicles and 23 people and the Libelle, the national road construction authority with three vehicles and eight people.
