Tunnel system in Gaza – Israel: “Terror facility” discovered under hospital

Date:

The Israeli army has uncovered more parts of the tunnel system under the Shifa Hospital in the Gaza Strip. She suspects that the largest hospital in Gaza is a command center for the Islamist Hamas. The military has released images of additional tunnel entrances and underground shelters. Reporters were also led through the rooms.

Israeli soldiers led the journalists through a narrow, 150-meter-long stone tunnel to several underground bunkers (see also video above). According to the AP news agency, the living rooms furnished there, including air conditioning, kitchen, bathroom and camp beds, have probably not been used for a long time. The military said at least some of the 240 people abducted in the October 7 terror attack were housed in the tunnels.

“Explosion-proof” door broken open
According to the military, the rooms were behind a recently broken “explosion-proof” door. This was at the end of a tunnel that the Israeli army discovered a few days ago during its controversial operation at the clinic.

“Shifa Hospital is the largest hospital in Gaza, and it is also Hamas’ largest terrorist facility,” military spokesman Daniel Hagari told reporters as bombs could be heard. “Hamas battalion commanders gave orders and fired rockets from here.”

Hospital was modernized by Israel
The Israeli military calls the underground shelter the most important discovery yet and is confident that a Hamas command center lies beneath the hospital. For a simple reason: under the Israeli occupation in the 1980s, the hospital was modernized and expanded, and an extensive basement was also added. An underground operating room was built, among other things. According to the Israeli army, these rooms were used by Hamas as a weapons depot and control center.

Israeli soldiers showed journalists, who were led through the basement system of Shifa hospital, Hamas weapons found there. This included dozens of Kalashnikov rifles, grenades and several drones used on the battlefield. Hamas and the administration of Gaza’s largest hospital deny that it is used as a command center.

Hospital as the army’s main target
Israel has designated Shifa Hospital as its main target in Gaza City, as Hamas uses the site and other sensitive locations such as schools and mosques as a cover for its military operations. Massive air raids and the subsequent ground offensive razed entire parts of the city to the ground. More than 11,000 Palestinians have been killed in the Gaza Strip since Hamas launched its unprecedented attack on southern Israel on October 7, prompting Israel to retaliate.

Israel is seeking to militarily destroy Hamas in the Gaza Strip, calling the war’s heavy toll an inevitable price for the fight against the terror organization that uses civilians as human shields and fires rockets from densely populated neighborhoods.
