The Israeli army said on Friday it has destroyed an underground tunnel complex near Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City. A video recording (see above) showed a powerful explosion in a building complex.
According to the army, the militant Palestinian organization Hamas has misused the tunnel complex for terrorist purposes. At least one of the hospital’s multi-story buildings appeared to be heavily damaged by the explosion, the video clip, which lasted just a few seconds, showed.
There are still 250 patients in hospital
Despite strong international criticism, Israeli soldiers have been deployed in and around the clinic for days. Numerous patients, including 31 premature babies, were brought to safety from the controversial hospital a few days after the start of the operation. According to the UN emergency response agency, around 250 patients and staff were in hospital on Friday morning.
The Israeli military had allowed foreign journalists access to the underground facility before the destruction of the tunnel complex at the Shifa Clinic. Images and videos showed a narrow tunnel and multiple rooms, including a room with two bed frames, toilets and a small kitchen. According to the information, the tunnel was ten meters deep and 55 meters long. According to the army, weapons were also found in the hospital.
The US supports Israel’s story
Hamas has denied using medical facilities for military purposes. The US government supported the Israeli narrative that Hamas was using Shifa Hospital as a command center and weapons depot.
