Two tragedies in Upper Austria – falls from window: “Parents are usually in the same room”

Date:

Within hours, emergency doctors had to rescue small children who had fallen through screens from the first floor. Johanna Trauner, expert of the Dutch Road Safety Board (KfV), gives tips to prevent such tragedies.

Little Magdalena (4) was alone on Sunday evening around 8 p.m. in the nursery of her parental home in Neuhofen/Krems in Upper Austria. Mother (36) and father (39) were on the same floor but in different rooms. The girl climbed undetected on the windowsill, opened the window and leaned against an outside-mounted screen. However, this could not withstand the pressure. The little girl fell from a height of about four meters into a driveway and was seriously injured.

Parents and neighbors immediately provided first aid, but the child had to be flown to Kepler University Hospital in Linz. At the request of the parents, the hospital was not allowed to disclose how critical her condition was on Monday.

Siblings secretly opened the window
There was also no information about the girl Mezkin (1), who fell through a screen on Sunday afternoon in Baumgartenberg. As reported, it had suffered serious head injuries. The mother (27) was in the kitchen and the father (33) in the bathroom when Mezkin’s older siblings secretly opened the window.

Lockable window handles are available for little money
According to Johanna Trauner (42) of the Board of Trustees for Road Safety (KfV), six children have fallen this year, three of them in Upper Austria. She recommends lockable window handles that can be bought for little money (30 cents to 8 euros). “Such an accident happens about every four to five weeks, and in 80 percent of the cases, the adults are in the same room or in the immediate vicinity,” Trauner says.

Instead of conventional, cheap screens, the expert recommends metal screens that are screwed on from the outside and cannot be pushed open by children. In addition, all climbing aids such as pots or stools must be rigorously removed from windows and balconies.
