Shocking femicides – Worldwide demonstrations: “Don’t want to count the dead anymore”

Date:

On Saturday evening, thousands of people took to the streets around the world. The reason was the International Day against Violence against Women. In Rome alone, 50,000 people marched through the city and showed their solidarity with the victims.

In Guatemala, candles were used to form the number 438 – the number of women murdered so far this year. In the Chilean capital Santiago de Chile, demonstrators held up posters with portraits of victims. In Istanbul, about 500 women gathered and held up signs reading “We will not be silent.” There were also demonstrations in Ankara.

In France, Maelle Lenoir of the group All of Us said: “We don’t want to count any more deaths.” She called on the government to spend more money to end violence against women. So far this year, 121 femicides have been recorded in France. In 2022 there were 118.

Statement by the Austrian Government
In Austria, the government published a joint statement. In a video released on Saturday morning on all social media channels of the ministers and departments, they expressed their support for the UN campaign ‘Orange the World’ against violence against women.

People also demonstrated in many German cities for an end to violence against women.

The negative trend continues
During the large demonstration in Rome, people gathered on the grounds of the Circus Maximus and waved posters with slogans for greater safety for women. There were also meetings in other Italian cities. According to the latest figures, 107 women have been murdered in Italy since the beginning of this year, many of them by their husbands or partners. This continues the negative trend that started in 2015, the EURES Institute shows in a report. Every third day a woman is murdered in Italy.

The demonstration in Rome was organized by Italian women’s associations. They also complain about discrimination in the labor market and a lack of childcare places. They demand more part-time jobs and support for families, as well as equal opportunities and an end to sexist treatment of women.

The demonstrations in Italy were influenced by the murder of a 22-year-old engineering student from Venice, who was stabbed to death by a fellow student of the same age. The man was arrested after a seven-day escape near Leipzig, which also took him to Lienz. He was extradited from Germany to Italy on Saturday and is now in custody in Verona. The woman’s body was found a week ago in a ravine in a mountainous area of the Friulian province of Pordenone.

Customized since 1981
Since 1981, human rights organizations have organized events every year on November 25 that focus on the fulfillment of human rights for women and girls and aim to strengthen women’s rights in general. Topics such as forced prostitution, sexual abuse, sex tourism, rape, female circumcision, domestic violence, forced marriage, prenatal sex selection, female poverty and femicide are particularly discussed.
