Better grain exports – EU: 50 million euros for repairs to Ukrainian ports

Date:

The EU is providing Ukraine with EUR 50 million to rebuild and expand ports damaged by Russian attacks. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also announced that international grain cargo ships crossing the Black Sea will be escorted by Ukrainian ships in the future.

“Improved port capacity will accelerate the export of food and other goods supplied by Ukraine to world markets,” said a letter from European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

“In the long term, our investments should allow Ukrainian ports to return to pre-war export volumes,” the report said on Saturday. On X (formerly Twitter), von der Leyen wrote about the letter published there: “Despite the war, Ukraine continues to feed the world. You can count on the EU in these efforts.” The pledge of 50 million coincided with an international summit on food safety in the Ukrainian capital Kiev.

One of the largest grain exporters in the world
Ukraine, which has been at war with neighboring Russia since the Russian invasion in February 2022, is one of the world’s largest grain exporters. In particular, Russia’s blockade of its Black Sea ports has made it significantly more difficult for Ukraine to bring its products to international markets. As a key interface for international exports, the Russian military has also repeatedly targeted the infrastructure of Ukrainian ports.

Zelenskiy also announced at the weekend summit that international grain cargo ships crossing the Black Sea could be escorted by Ukrainian ships in the future to further enhance security. “We already have concrete agreements to retain ships,” he said. “That is a matter for the near future.” He did not provide details.
