Prelude to the major trial against bribery and corruption in “Wiener Wohnen”. 45 former foremen of the city of Vienna are also accused. They plead not guilty. The main suspect, the entrepreneur, has also not confessed. He surprises with his responsibility.
It’s an unusual sight in the grand jury courtroom in Landl, Vienna: the first five rows are filled with defendants, the majority of whom are men over 50. 49 of the 53 defendants are present. The main suspect businessman is accused of “bribing” 45 former employees of the Wiener Wohnen between 2011 and 2013. The city’s foremen were ‘rewarded’ with vouchers for billing fictitious repair services in municipal buildings.
Chief public prosecutor: “It’s a joke”
From the WKStA’s point of view, the 58-year-old took on a “completely absurd responsibility”: “It’s a fantasy, a joke.” Accordingly, the house lists documenting the apparent damage were created only “to get money from his sister, who is responsible for the bookkeeping.” For pleasure, specifically for visiting brothels. “He led a dissolute life,” argues lawyer Martin Nemec.
None of the accused foremen claim to have accepted receipts. “You don’t have to prove yourself free. The WKStA must provide the proof,” says lawyer Norbert Wess, who represents 35 of them.
A single confession
As the judge shows the audience who is not guilty, 48 hands go up in the grand jury room. Only one of the company’s employees pleaded guilty. The man represented by Philipp Wolm admits to having drawn up fictitious lists.
