In France, there were more than twelve million smokers who picked up a cigarette every day in 2021 – that’s a quarter of all 18 to 75 year olds. But the smoke should be over now. At least on beaches, in parks, forests and for schools.
Anyone who buys a pack of cigarettes in France currently pays eleven euros. This price is expected to rise by two euros in 2026.
The sale of vape pens and disposable flavored e-cigarettes should be banned by law. These are “a disaster for public health and the environment”.
“Tobacco-free zones must become the norm,” Health Minister Aurélien Rousseau said on Tuesday. One would ‘make the exception the rule’. There are currently about 7,200 such zones in the country.
200 deaths every day
“If in a few years the terrible number of 200 deaths per day due to tobacco use has fallen by ten, twenty or fifty, then we will know that it was a good decision,” Rousseau emphasized.
The minister emphasized that raising the price of cigarettes “is the most effective tool against tobacco,” citing studies by the World Health Organization (WHO).
French President Emmanuel Macron set the goal of reaching the first ‘tobacco-free generation’ by 2032. Smoke-free pioneers New Zealand and Great Britain are also pursuing this goal (see links above).
