Now the last Finnish border crossing with Russia is closed to passenger traffic. The reason is the constant influx of migrants from the neighboring country.
The Finnish Border Guard has been recording for weeks a sharp increase in the number of people, mainly from the Middle East, entering from Russia without the necessary documents and requesting asylum in Finland. Little by little, the Nordic EU and recently the NATO country have closed their border crossings with Russia.
The lights are now also going out north of the Arctic Circle
Only the Raja-Jooseppi border crossing in Lapland, north of the Arctic Circle, was recently open to passenger traffic. But countless migrants made the difficult journey there – or were supported by Russian authorities, as the Finnish government complains.
Now Raja-Jooseppi will also be closed, Prime Minister Petteri Orpo announced on Tuesday. The ban must remain in force for at least two weeks.
One border station remains open for freight traffic
The Finnish Schengen and NATO external border in the east is no less than 1,340 kilometers long. On the entire route, only the Vainikkala border station in southeastern Finland is currently open to rail freight.
