If you haven’t already, break out your scarf and mittens in the next few days because it’s going to be cold and wintry! According to experts from the Austrian Center for Severe Weather (uwz), the weather will bring rain and snow to the country until Advent 1.
According to experts, it should first turn white in the west, in Vorarlberg and Tyrol. The snowfall starts there in the morning hours and gradually spreads during the day with mainly light intensity to the Innviertel and Burgenland. However, it remains dry in the Danube region and in the northeast. The snow line will gradually rise to above 1000 meters in the far south and west during the day. Light sleet may fall locally in the evening and then in the north. The daily maximum temperatures are between -2 and +4 degrees.
Only in the south there are nightly showers
Rain and snow will fall everywhere in the country on Friday. Particularly in the northeast and on the eastern edge of the Alps, freezing rain can occasionally fall. As the evening progresses, rain and snowfall will become heavier, with the snowfall line in the north gradually dropping back to low elevations. The maximum values are between 0 and +5 degrees from north to south. During the night, rain turns to snowfall across the entire north side of the Alps and in the east, while heavy rain continues to fall only in the south. Several centimeters of fresh snow can be expected, especially in the central and eastern mountains.
Frost is coming in the west
Saturday starts cloudy in Austria and the snow line is initially often between low altitudes and around 800 meters in the south, but drops throughout the day everywhere in the lowlands. Snowfall from the west will decrease during the afternoon, but some snow will continue to fall in the north and northeast until the evening. From north to south, temperatures reach -2 to +3 degrees. During the night, it will loosen somewhat regionally, causing severe frost in the west and south.
1. Advent starts partly sunny
At least temporarily we can start the 1st Advent on a sunny note. Even in the lowlands, temperatures only reach just above freezing. There will be moderate to severe frost in large parts of the country on Monday night.
