Archbishop Reinhard Marx of Munich excludes supporters of the right-wing populist Alternative for Germany from holding church office. It is “not acceptable” for Christians to vote for a party that represents anti-constitutional positions, the cardinal said on Thursday.
According to him, there should be no binding rules on whether AfD supporters are allowed to hold church offices, at least for the time being. The AfD became the third strongest force in the Bavarian state elections in October with just under 15 percent of the vote.
‘Clear boundaries against right-wing extremism’
Within the bishops’ conference, “everyone was shocked” by the recent successes, Marx said at the committee meeting in Munich. He is ‘convinced that a clear line must be drawn against right-wing extremism’.
Marx rejected widespread incompatibility decisions between church offices and AfD memberships. Corresponding decisions for parish councils, for example, fall under their responsibility and are also legally uncertain.
