A fire in the country’s longest railway tunnel causes enormous problems for the Russians at the front in Ukraine. Two explosions in two days have paralyzed the important transport route from China. According to reports, partisans could be behind it.
Ukraine’s security service has blown up a rail link deep into Russia, a senior official told the BBC. The explosions are said to have occurred in several trains traveling first through a tunnel and then over a bridge in the Russian Far East.
Russia: “Case of terrorism”
Russia has reportedly launched an investigation into a “criminal case of terrorism” following the attacks on the Baikal-Amur route, which runs along the border with China. However, the extent of the damage was not disclosed. According to Ukrainian sources, this was apparently intended to ‘disable’ important infrastructure occasionally used by the Russians for military purposes.
After the first incident in the Severomuisk tunnel on Wednesday evening, Russian railway officials said staff noticed smoke in a fuel tank and the train was stopped. At 15 km, the tunnel is the longest railway tunnel in Russia and is located in the Buryatia region, north of Mongolia.
The Russians fell into the ‘trap’.
A senior Ukrainian official told the BBC that the freight train actually exploded in the tunnel. The Russians then fell into the “trap” of using an alternative bridge route. “This is exactly what the Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) was counting on. During the passage of the train over this high, 35-meter-long bridge, the explosives placed there detonated.”
The second explosion was not confirmed anywhere, although Russian Telegram channel Baza reported that another train was later blown up in the same area. The incidents are believed to have occurred on Wednesday and Thursday and there is no information about possible victims. The explosions reportedly caused damage to fuel tanks and railway lines.
