Hours after the tragic collision between two trains in Sattendorf on Lake Ossiach, the “Krone” was involved in the rescue operations. During the local inspection, residents describe the dramatic moments after the accident.
“At first I thought something had exploded. The bang was so incredibly loud,” said a resident of Sattendorf who lives hundreds of meters from the scene of the accident. The events were even more dramatic for a resident whose house is right next to the Geisen: “Our walls were even shaking – we could hear the driver screaming in pain,” said the pensioner, who himself worked for the ÖBB for many years.
“Guardian angel at work”
Most importantly, the driver who was trapped in the driver’s cab miraculously escaped (as reported by the “Krone”) with an ankle injury. “There were certainly several guardian angels at work”, was the general opinion at the scene of the accident. Because it is hard to believe that anyone would come out of the wrecked locomotive alive. It is still unclear how the side collision between the S-Bahn and the freight train could have happened on Tuesday evening a few meters before or after the train station.
Investigation and recovery of the wreck
“The investigation into this is still ongoing. At the moment we are just happy that this accident did not have any worse consequences. And the driver and the other people involved are doing well considering the circumstances,” says Rosanna Zerbatto-Peschel of ÖBB.
On Wednesday, work was in full swing at the accident site to restore traffic as quickly as possible. The badly damaged S-Bahn locomotive was lifted back onto the track by crane, so that the set could be rolled to Villach.
