Deadly Sunday? – Avalanche time: experts call for restraint

Date:

Sunday will be a sunny dream day, but it can also end disastrously. The Tyrolean avalanche warning officers have again issued danger level 4, or high avalanche danger, for large parts of Tyrol.

Today everything comes together: it’s Sunday, the sun is shining for the first time in a long time, the mountains are covered with fantastic snow. Many Tyrolean tourers and off-piste skiers will no longer be able to stay at home in their living room.

Danger level 4
Absolute restraint is required in the field. “We have received large amounts of fresh snow and there are also problems with a weak layer in the snow cover,” said Patrick Nairz, head of the Tyrolean avalanche warning service. Nairz and his team have once again declared a high avalanche danger level 4 for large parts of North Tyrol – at altitudes above 2000 meters.

“We are in a so-called avalanche period,” the expert warns anyone who has too much self-confidence. “These are small periods in which many accidents happen. I fear a day with many accidents.”

Piste tours as a safe alternative, treacherous sliding snow avalanches
He advises anyone who wants to go off-road despite the great danger to limit their ski touring to secured slopes or one of the official ski touring routes in the ski areas – many of which are already open. “The conditions there are ideal, you can travel safely.”

Sliding snow avalanches from meadow slopes are also currently a problem and are particularly dangerous for traffic routes. As is known, such a sliding snow avalanche buried a municipal road in Raumsau in the Zillertal on Saturday.
