One injured person – Several avalanches, one victim simply ran away

Date:

Despite the experts’ warnings, many winter sports enthusiasts ventured into open terrain in Tyrol on Sunday. A buried victim, who was miraculously freed unharmed, then simply disappeared.

Shortly before 10 a.m., an off-piste skier had great luck in the free ski room in the Hochfügen ski area. “He was the last of a group of three who drove up a slope and released a 100-meter-wide and 40-meter-long snow slab with a one-meter-high crack edge,” said Florian Bauernfeind, head of the Alpine police in the Schwaz district. The athlete was buried up to his neck.

Three helicopters and mountain rescuers on site
Three helicopters and the mountain rescue team, including a search dog, responded to the accident scene as witnesses dug out the uninjured man. “Then he disappeared without revealing his details,” Bauernfeind says angrily.

No further casualties in Hochfügen
The rescuers searched the avalanche for possible additional victims, but were then able to quickly end the operation. There was no one else under the mass of snow.

The buried person freed himself
Shortly after 11 a.m., a 57-year-old Jochberg resident skied down the free ski area on the east side of the Steinbergkogel. According to the Alpine police, the man caused a snow patch on the steep slope of 30 to 35 degrees. The skier was partially buried and was able to free himself. The local resident only broke a finger in the accident and was eventually rescued with the rope by the Libelle Tirol police helicopter.

Curious operation in Kühtai
In the Wörgetal in Kühtai, a skier was suspected of being hit by an avalanche because a trail led to a snowboard, but none to the outside. It turned out that they were animal tracks leading to the avalanche. The crew of the police helicopter Libelle Tirol revealed that a chamois was the cause of the tracks. Nothing appears to have happened to the animal.
