The Chinese military accuses the US of illegally entering the waters around the disputed Second Thomas Shoal atoll in the South China Sea. This is a region over which a handful of states are competing with China.
“The US has seriously undermined peace and stability in the region,” a spokesperson for the South China Operations Center said on Monday. The US had deliberately violated China’s sovereignty, the accusation said, which was not commented on in Washington.
“Troops on high alert”
According to information from Beijing, as soon as the US warship was sighted, naval forces were mobilized to track and monitor the “intruder”. Troops in the region are on high alert at all times to resolutely defend national sovereignty, the report said.
The Philippines and the US are strengthening military cooperation
There have been frequent clashes between China and the Philippines recently over the “Second Thomas Shoal”. Beijing is apparently trying to cut off the Philippine military’s supply routes to a damaged ship being used as an outpost.
In response to this muscle-flexing, the Philippine government has increased military cooperation with the United States. Joint sea and air patrols began in the region last month.
