While treating a patient suffering from Covid-19 and a hantavirus infection, researchers from Salzburg accidentally discovered a way to potentially treat Covid-19 with drugs.
A 38-year-old presented to the emergency room with visual problems, diarrhea and nausea and was also ill with Covid-19. The doctors therefore concluded that there was serious kidney damage and treated the man with an antibody. A single infusion was enough to bring his values back to normal and the kidney to function normally again. The man had probably previously contracted the Hanta virus when he was cleaning out a chicken coop and inhaled the virus.
The inner layer of blood vessels and their occlusion are the most dangerous consequences of illness with a virus. This can possibly be prevented by medication. In addition to dialysis doctor Hermann Salmhofer from the Paracelsus Medical University Salzburg, other Salzburg authors and scientists from MedUni Vienna and the Vienna General Hospital and from Budapest were also involved in the publication.
