In the Swiss village of Aarwangen, two couples caused a lot of controversy because they were disturbed by cowbells at night. The complaint led to a counter initiative and a referendum is now being planned.
With their complaint, the two noise-sensitive couples actually only wanted to ensure that the fifteen cows in an adjacent pasture did not wear bells at night.
Traditionalists launched a counter initiative
What they probably did not expect was that traditionalists would then appear on the scene and launch a counter-initiative. As part of this initiative, 1,099 signatures were collected for every bell rung in the community, which has a population of approximately 4,800.
Bell supporters claim that “cowbells are part of the DNA of the Swiss.” According to the other side, calling is no longer necessary. These were originally intended to make it easier to find the animals on the alpine meadows. Nowadays this can also be done via GPS.
A referendum is being prepared
To resolve the issue once and for all, Aarwangen is now preparing a referendum, which is expected to take place in June 2024.
