Every year again – this year too, the dream of a white Christmas comes true

Date:

Ultimately, the dream of a white Christmas will probably remain what it is this year: a dream. At least that’s what meteorologists and experts are currently predicting for us. Detailed calculations are available until December 22. Thawing weather with temperatures up to 10 degrees is possible by then. But in the days that follow, there should not be a snowflake to be seen…

The experts at UBIMET have already warned not to have too high expectations of a white Christmas. In the capitals of the states, the chance of a white Christmas has been around 20 to 30 percent over the past thirty years. In addition, Christmas holidays in Austria have become on average 1 to 2.5 degrees warmer in recent decades.

Just a vague childhood memory
For many, a white Christmas is actually just a vague memory from childhood. In fact, this only happened in Innsbruck and Klagenfurt in the last ten years; the other capitals have unfortunately been empty-handed for some time. As ORF weather boss Marcus Wadsak reveals to us on Twitter (“X”), this year will probably be no different: “Pretty mild,” is how he describes the forecast until December 22. By then, a maximum of 10 degrees can be expected and according to Wadsak, the following days will show “nothing cold”.

According to Geosphere Austria, it will be significantly warmer in the country next Sunday. Sunshine can be expected in almost the entire country and in Vienna maximum temperatures can reach 9 degrees.

Sad look back on the past years
The series of bad luck that has followed us for a long time will probably stay with us. If we look back in time, there have been two white Christmases in the federal capital since 2010.

The last white Christmas was in St. Pölten in 2007. In Graz, Eisenstadt, Linz, Salzburg and Bregenz, snow has only fallen once since 2010. In Klagenfurt the last snow was on Christmas Eve only two years ago.

Special records in 1969
Where there was often a lot of snow was in the sixties. In Klagenfurt it was white every year. In particular, the records from 1969 in the north and east still stand: at that time there was 24 cm of white splendor in Linz, 30 cm in Vienna, 39 cm in Eisenstadt and even 50 cm in St. Pölten.

Too hot again this year
However, Wadsak emphasizes another aspect in a post on Twitter: Large parts of Europe are also currently warmer than average. “However, in Scandinavia and Russia it is colder than normal,” said the expert. In short, it is too hot again this year worldwide…
