Migration pressure is increasing – “They can’t hold on much longer”

Date:

The number of refugees coming to Europe illegally has increased enormously this year. In Austria, however, there is currently a decline of almost 70 percent, explains the head of the Central Office for Combating Trafficking in Human Beings at the Federal Criminal Police Office, Gerald Tatzgern, in the krone.tv interview with Jana Pasching. However, the expert doubts whether this trend will continue.

According to Frontex, around 332,000 people attempted to enter the EU irregularly in the first ten months of this year. The migration pressure towards Europe is currently immense. “We also notice this when our Turkish colleagues describe to us what is happening here on Turkey’s eastern border, especially with Iran.”

Serbia is currently doing a lot to more or less interrupt the route. “With great difficulty, with the army and the special forces. They can’t keep this up much longer,” Tatzgern said. “But we currently notice that the trajectory is shifting a bit. So from Bosnia towards Croatia and Slovenia, but also towards Italy, but also towards Austria.”

January could show the first trends
It is clear that Serbia will soon have to relax its measures for reasons of human and financial resources. “Then more people will be transferred to this country,” said Tatzgern. “I expect that the first trends will be visible in January via Hungary to Austria, where we will of course keep a close eye on it.”

If winter is not too cold, you can also expect tows in the coming weeks. In Austria, 50 to 80 people are currently being picked up every day.

The Taliban have their fingers in the game
The Taliban are also involved in smuggling, as international cooperation investigations show, Tatzgern said.

“We have already identified a few and now we have to find out whether they were members of the Taliban and are now active as smugglers or whether the Taliban actually have a hand in this and might want to make a lot of money from it.”
