Ferdinand Marcos Jr. – Dictator’s son becomes president of the Philippines

Date:

The Philippine Congress has named the dictator’s son, Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos junior, as its next president. According to official counts from the Senate and House of Representatives, the former senator received 58.77 percent of the popular vote in the popular election about two weeks ago. He won by more than 16.5 million votes for outgoing vice president Leni Robredo.

“Bongbong’s” father Ferdinand Marcos was ousted about 36 years ago after a popular uprising against corruption and human rights abuses.

Sara Duterte-Carpio, daughter of outgoing President Rodrigo Duterte, was named the next vice president with 61.53 percent of the vote. The two newly elected candidates will be sworn in for a six-year term on June 30 (see video above). Hours before the announcement, protesters clashed with police as they gathered near the House of Representatives.

The regime under Ferdinand Marcos (1917-1989) and his eccentric wife Imelda (now 92) had for years made a name for itself with the murder and kidnapping of political opponents. The couple would also have funneled billions from the state coffers. In 1986, the family was evicted from the island and fled to Hawaii. After the death of the dictator in 1989, the widow returned to the Philippines in the early 1990s.
