Anthropologist explains – Not just at Christmas: why we give each other presents

The fact that the number of packages is increasing these days is once again evident: presents are on the rise at Christmas. The celebration of love has also become, if not exclusively, a celebration of giving. But why do we give away precious and valuable things year after year when we could keep them for ourselves?

According to the trade association, Austrians want to spend an average of 360 euros on gifts this year. In Upper Austria it is slightly more (401 euros), in Carinthia slightly less (295 euros). Traditionally the most popular is and remains the voucher (41 percent), followed by toys (30 percent) and candy (28 percent). A study by Deloitte shows similar results (see below).
