Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama was not a statesman at all in an interview outside the headquarters of his socialist party on Tuesday. He simply punched a journalist in the face who asked critical questions – because of his aggressive behavior he is now accused of trying to intimidate her.
When Albanian journalist Ambrozia Meta wants to question him about a controversial investment project involving Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, the situation escalates. Rama reacted unusually aggressively and apparently inappropriately hit the journalist on the head.
“Touched your cheek with your hand.”
Meta, who works for Albanian television channel Syri TV, responded quickly and asked Rama to stop touching her – after the incident, she explained that the prime minister “touched me on the cheek with his hand”.
“Unfortunately, Prime Minister Rama is now showing his usual arrogance towards journalists with a physical attack. “I am sorry that the head of government cannot control himself when asked about issues of public interest,” the journalist said.
Rama’s behavior ‘unacceptable’
Rama himself does not want to know about an attack. According to an eyewitness account, he stated that he did not behave aggressively and that he answered all questions patiently. The controversy nevertheless caused widespread outrage among the public, especially among women’s rights groups. The organization WomenInJournalism, for example, has sharply criticized Rama, calling his behavior “unacceptable.” It is not the first time that the prime minister has treated the critical press with contempt.
This incident comes at a time when Rama is already facing widespread criticism. Last year there were nationwide protests in Albania calling for his resignation over alleged corruption and mismanagement. The opposition also accuses him and his government of links to organized crime and bad economic policies.
