Hurricane-like wind gusts raged across Austria on Friday night. Uprooted trees, power outages, closed roads and fallen roof sections kept emergency services busy all night. In Salzburg alone, the fire brigade carried out a total of 120 missions.
In the Liefering district of Salzburg, a tree fell on a passing trolleybus. A 55-year-old driver was injured. In addition, emergency services had to free people from stuck ski lifts after several power outages.
Flights diverted in Salzburg
Also at the airport, two planes coming from Hamburg and Düsseldorf were diverted to Linz due to strong crosswinds, and two other connections were canceled, according to airport spokesman Alexander Klaus.
35,000 households without electricity
In Upper Austria, about 35,000 households were without power for hours due to the “Zoltan” storm. About 2,000 households were still affected in the early morning hours. In Wels, for example, the storm tore the roof off the gymnasium of a primary school.
Tyrol was also hit
In addition, numerous Tyroleans had to be without power until the early morning hours due to the storm. Just over 900 households were affected.
It remains stormy
The weather warning remains in effect on Friday and Saturday. More storms, snow and sometimes heavy rain are expected.
