A mother experienced strange things when she needed an ambulance with her baby. Because the co-ordinator told her that chaperones can’t always be brought along – even if it’s a six-week-old baby.
Petra P.’s six-week-old son was born with two club feet. The deformity is easy to treat, but it takes time. Every week she and her baby have to go from the Viennese bacon belt to the Speising hospital to have the plaster replaced.
No room for prams
“We have ordered a transport from the rescue center – for my wife, our son and the pram. Because of the caesarean section, she is not allowed to lift anything heavy,” says father Andreas P. When the transport arrived, however, there was no room for the pram. There was already a patient in a wheelchair in the car P.: “We had to wait three hours for the next transport.”
Baby on the way to the hospital alone?
But that wasn’t the biggest problem. When the family wanted to order transport again, the coordinator said: “But you may not be able to travel as a companion.” Even when Petra P. explained that she was the mother of a six-week-old baby, opinion has not changed. There was also more turbulence when P. had to stay in the hospital one night longer than planned. Since there was no return transport available, she had to stay there one more night.
“These are isolated cases. And of course the mother of a baby should always be allowed to ride with her,” a Red Cross spokeswoman apologized.
