The Viennese machete murder kept the Austrian and foreign authorities on edge for months. An Algerian man had his lower leg and forearm practically cut off on the Danube Canal. The Vienna public prosecutor’s office has now filed charges against four compatriots.
Last spring, an Algerian man was found literally dismembered in front of the Jägerstraße metro station in Vienna’s 20th district (Brigittenau). A bloody act that shocked all of Austria. A suspect has already been arrested at the scene. It soon became clear: he did not commit the crime alone.
Chopped up with a machete and knife
After months of investigations, international arrest warrants and arrests in France, the Vienna public prosecutor’s office has now charged four suspects with murder. The men, aged between 21 and 29, allegedly attacked the 32-year-old “with a machete and a knife and deliberately killed him,” the prosecutor wrote in a press release.
On the night of April 19, 2023, the now accused Algerians are said to have attacked their victim in an ambush. His lower leg and forearm were practically separated by the blows. A few days later the man died in hospital from blood loss. The murder weapon – a machete – was accidentally found in a bush near the Danube Canal by a dog owner.
“Extremely conflictual introduction”
The Public Prosecution Service indicates as a motive: “The four men and their victim had a long-term acquaintance that was severely affected by conflict.” The victim was a drug dealer known to police. The suspects also come from this environment.
The complaint filed does not yet have legal force; the four men now have fourteen days to file an objection with the court. If three of them are convicted of murder, they could face life in prison. One of the Algerians was under 21 years old at the time of the crime and could therefore only be sentenced to twenty years in prison.
