The first fatality occurred in the mountains of Tyrol on New Year’s Day, the “Krone” reported. A German (54) fell 30 meters while walking to the Bärenkopf. All help came too late for the alpinist. Martin Roner, local branch manager of the Maurach mountain rescue service, was present during the operation.
It should have been the first leisurely walk of the new year. However, it ended in tragedy for a group of holidaymakers on Monday. Five people from Germany wanted to hike in Pertisau from the Zwölferkopf via the Bärenbadalm to the Bärenkopf. The alpinists had clearly underestimated the winter conditions in advance. “Due to the slippery nature of the ground, the group decided to turn around and go to the Bärenbadalm around 2 p.m.,” the researchers say.
Crashed 30 meters above the gully and avalanche cone
The accident happened about an hour later. One of the hikers, a 54-year-old, slipped. First, the man fell about thirty feet into a gully over steep, rocky terrain. “He then slid another twenty meters on a frozen avalanche cone,” investigators explain further details of the accident. The crash resulted in the immediate death of the German.
Mountain rescuers flew to the scene by helicopter
“We were asked by Heli 3 to provide support. Two of us were caught on the rope and flown to the scene of the accident. From there we guided the other hikers to the Karwendelbergbahn,” says Martin Roner, local branch manager of the Maurach mountain rescue service. Police had initially said the alpinists had been flown away by helicopter. A total of five mountain rescuers were present. Not the first that day, by the way. “We were already working somewhere else beforehand, but it went smoothly for us. We were done at 6 p.m.,” Roner concludes.
Due to darkness, the body could not be recovered until Tuesday.
