The new year started the same way the old one ended: far too mild. But that will probably be over next weekend: from Saturday winter will make a dramatic comeback with lots of fresh snow, even at low altitudes. This is followed by permanent frost.
It was the fifteenth warmest December ever, but the first days of January were also far too warm. On Wednesday it will even be 15 degrees locally on the eastern edge of the Alps during the day.
Winter return this weekend
But according to UBIMET experts, winter will return to its proper task this weekend. A low pressure area will reach Central Europe on Saturday, while at the same time colder air from Northern and Northeastern Europe will flow into the Alpine region. Combined with another low over the Mediterranean bringing some much-needed moisture, deep winter conditions will gradually develop across the country this weekend.
Snow and rain on Saturday
It will rain and snow throughout Austria on Saturday. The snowfall line varies greatly. In the morning he commutes between 600 meters in Vorarlberg and North Tyrol and about 1100 meters in East Tyrol and Carinthia. As the day progresses, increasingly colder air from the north slowly filters in, meaning snowflakes up to 500 meters are possible along and north of the Alps around midday. In the evening the snow line increasingly drops to lower altitudes.
Almost nationwide snow cover until Sunday
Snow will fall on a large scale on Sunday night, especially at low altitudes. In the south, the snowfall line remains slightly higher than in the rest of the country. It will also snow a lot in the morning, with frequent permafrost. During the day, snowfall becomes lighter and concentrates on the northern parts of the Alps. But here too, the dry phases in the evening are becoming more common and on Monday night it will dry out everywhere.
This coming weekend, a more or less thick layer of snow will form in almost all of Austria. Only in some areas of Lower Carinthia could it remain green.
