A lucky person in the US has won the $842.4 million New Year’s jackpot in the state of Michigan. The Michigan Lottery announced Tuesday that the Powerball ticket had been sold at a supermarket in the town of Grand Blanc, population 8,000.
It is still unclear who won the equivalent of almost 772 million euros, as the lucky winner has not yet reported. It was the first time since 1992 that the jackpot, which has been steadily growing since October 11, was won on New Year’s Day. Monday’s drawing was the 35th drawing since the jackpot was last won on October 11, 2023. A ticket purchased in California won the $1.76 billion jackpot.
Tenth largest win in US lottery history
It is the fifth largest Powerball jackpot and the tenth largest in US lottery history. The lucky player’s winning ticket matched all the numbers drawn on Monday evening (12, 21, 42, 44, 49) and the so-called Powerball (01). The odds of winning the Powerball jackpot are one in 292.2 million.
In the Powerball lottery, five numbers out of 69 must be selected and an additional number (Powerball) out of 26. The draws always take place on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday evenings. A tip costs two dollars or three dollars with the Power Play option introduced in 2001.
One-off or installment payment possible
The profit can be paid out in one go or in installments. The winner must choose one of the two options within 60 days. With a one-off payment, the winning amount is lower than the installment payment, but the full amount is paid out immediately.
