Desert scenes played out Wednesday in a court in Las Vegas, Nevada. A suspect accused of serious bodily harm suddenly sprinted to the judge’s table as his sentence was being pronounced, jumped over it and threw himself at the judge (see video).
The incident happened as Judge Mary Kay Holthus was about to sentence 30-year-old Deobra Redden, who has already committed three crimes, for aggravated assault. His lawyer had previously asked that his client get away with a suspended sentence.
But Holthus had something else in mind for the repeat offender. “I think it’s time for him (Redden, editor’s note) to try something different, because I just can’t do anything else with this history,” she said before the verdict was announced. This apparently caused the man to blow all his fuses.
Pike jumps over the scorer’s table
The 30-year-old sprinted to the judge’s table, lunged at the judge with her arms outstretched, and threw her to the ground. During the commotion, an American flag and the Nevada state flag fell to the ground. Court staff and security personnel dragged Redden, who insulted the judge, away from her.
But Redden would not be calmed down, tried to break free and attack Holthus again, who was still on the floor behind the judge’s table. The 30-year-old got into a wild scuffle and fight with the officers, and the men struggled to restrain him.
“What the fuck is wrong with you, man?” you hear someone shouting in the background. “Where’s Mary Kay (Holthus) – is she okay?” a man asked as he finally managed to overpower Redden and handcuff him.
Right slightly injured in the head
Judge Holthus suffered a minor head wound in the attack but is said to be doing well. A security guard was also injured in the commotion. “Thank God the judge is okay,” said District Attorney Steve Wolfson. One can be grateful “for the heroic efforts of those who came to her aid, especially her bailiff and her clerk.”
Following Wednesday’s attack, Redden now faces additional charges of assault and “assault on a protected person.” According to court records, he has already appeared before Judge Holthus once on a charge of malicious destruction of property. He also served a year in prison in 2021 for domestic violence.
