Rainwater and raw fish every day: Using this somewhat one-sided diet, an Australian and his dog survived in the Pacific for about two months. “I only had fishing tackle,” Tim Shaddock told one of his rescuers.
The 51-year-old Australian and his dog “Bella” left the Mexican coastal city of La Paz in April for a 6,000-kilometer journey to French Polynesia. But after a short time, the catamaran was damaged in rough seas and the electronics were paralyzed. The boat drifted in the Pacific Ocean, unable to maneuver.
Spectacular rescue operation
In a spectacular rescue operation reminiscent of the Tom Hanks movie Cast Away, Shaddock and “Bella” were finally pulled from the sea by a Mexican tuna trawler. The shaggy-bearded 51-year-old was noticeably emaciated but sane, according to a video released by Australian TV channel 9News.
In a second video, he told his rescuers that he had been through quite an “trial”. “Now I just need rest and good food.”
