Blogger Sergei Tijanosvski sentenced to 18 years in prison for organizing riots, acts of violence and disobedience against authorities

Belarus’ Supreme Court on Wednesday confirmed the sentence of 18 years in prison for blogger Sergei Tijanosvski, husband of current opposition leader Svetlana Tijanosvkaya, and several riot suspects. The court, which has published the results of the appeal hearing through its official Telegram channel, upholds the decision of the Regional Court of Gomel dated December 14, 2021.

The judge found it proven that the blogger and his allies organized riots and acts of violence and disobedience against the authorities. The defendants are guilty of violating four articles of the Criminal Code, according to the first trial that took place in the closed pre-trial detention center in Gomel, a city in southeastern Belarus.

Tijanosvki was due to participate in the August 2020 elections, which his wife eventually went to after his arrest. Tiyanovskaya, Charlemagne Prize 2022, was the most voted opposition candidate, although the electoral commission awarded her only 10% of the vote, far from what the opposition claimed.
