According to a state broadcast, on May 11 in the municipality of Steinach am Brenner, a wolf from the Italian population was genetically detected by means of a DNA sample in a dead doe that was examined in the municipality of Steinach am Brenner. In the investigation of two sheep deaths on 16 and 17 May 2022 from the municipality of Neustift in the Stubai Valley, a wolf from the Italian population was also genetically detected for both times.
The DNA of a golden jackal has been found in a deer from the municipality of Telfes in the Stubaital that was examined on May 11, 2022. Almost at the same time, another predator in Scharnitz was or is on the move: wildlife camera shots from last week show a bear there.
Wolf opponents want to take action now
The association “Weidezone Tirol” speaks of 21 incidents this year. Most of the animals would still be on the meadows. Club president Stefan Brugger is now sharp: “Until now we have always sought dialogue and demanded active action. From the governor, however, we were only stopped, reassured, lied to and fobbed off with weak excuses. I think now is the time for us to leave the negotiating table and finally take action.”
31 dead sheep
There is also unrest on the Oberhofer Alm, where a wolf killed 31 sheep almost exactly a year ago. Although the herders have not found any dead animals this year, they are very concerned. With every grazing there is also the fear of being attacked by a predator. “I have been a sheep farmer and shepherd for about 45 years. After last year’s events, one thing is certain for me: if the wolf continues like this this year, it will be sheep farming for me,” says Anton Schreier, sheep farmer Oberhofen.
