Helpers save giant sperm whale in China

Date:

Rescuers rescued a giant sperm whale that had washed ashore on a beach in the coastal town of Zhejiang province in eastern China. Rescuers had to wait hours for the tide – then the nearly 20-meter-long marine mammal swam away and dove.

The incident happened in April, but the footage (video above) has only just been released. Because the sperm whale, which weighed several tons, could not just be pulled into the water, the helpers had to wait 20 hours for high tide. Meanwhile, the marine mammal was constantly sprayed with water.

Survived almost a day on land
When the tide finally came and the water level rose again, the helpers were able to pull the giant toothed whale back into the sea. The sea giant dove and survived almost a day on land.

Sperm whales, which mainly feed on squid, rarely come to the beach. Normally, the animals stay in the depths of the ocean to hunt. The bulls can dive to more than 1000 meters deep.
