The universally unpopular summer construction sites are just around the corner. Drivers in Vienna are put to the test during the three-month total closure of the Franzensbrücke.
Summer in Vienna could be so beautiful if there were no annoying construction sites. Several major projects are in the pipeline this year, culminating in the renovation of the much-visited Franzensbrücke. Since the start of construction at the end of April, one lane towards the second district has been closed, leading to long traffic jams in the morning. From June 6, this three months will be completely closed to traffic, only pedestrians and bicycle traffic will be led over the newly constructed footbridge.
One lane in each direction will be reopened from September. Motorists will also be annoyed by the repairs to the Heiligenstädter Bridge. Traffic to the 19th arrondissement is one lane, while over the bridge two lanes can be used in the opposite direction. The ban will last for two months.
In addition, there is the renovation of the U4 tunnel ceiling, which will close two lanes between Salztorbrücke and Marienbrücke in July and August.
Delivery bottlenecks and higher material costs
But the construction sector is also currently being hit by supply problems and increased material costs. “We have taken into account additional costs and can also stick to the schedule from the current perspective, but that can change quickly,” says Nikolaus Hejda (MA 29). The concern is therefore that the summer on construction sites will no longer drag on.
