On Saturday night, the Viennese professional fire brigade had to intervene on a large scale. An 80 meter long ship threatened to sink on the Danube.
Emergency services were called to the Vienna marina in Leopoldstadt shortly after midnight after the ship’s crew discovered a leak.
Huge amount of water
According to the fire brigade, it was an approximately 15 centimeter long crack in the ship’s hull, through which a huge amount of water quickly entered the engine room under the cabin.
At the last second
When emergency services arrived, the corn-laden ship could only be seen with its upper deck on the port side and was about to sink. The ship was immediately completely evacuated and the four crew members were taken to safety.
Oil barrier built
Shortly afterwards, emergency services started pumping out the water. The deployment was extremely difficult due to the available space. By pumping out the water from the engine room, some of the engine oil was also pumped out. Therefore, an oil barrier was built under the sinking ship.
