In Russia, a train conductor threw what appeared to be a stray cat out of a compartment. Only ten hours after departure did a passenger report that he missed his animal.
“The passengers noticed the tomcat running around in the carriage unattended,” a state railway statement said. The train conductor asked the passengers if the animal belonged to anyone, but no one answered. The woman then threw the cat out of the compartment because she suspected that the owner was looking for his cat at the train station.
Owner was probably sleeping
In fact, he was on the moving train and was probably sleeping. Ten hours after leaving Kirov, east of Moscow, for St. Petersburg, he reported to staff that he had missed his hangover. Hundreds of volunteers then searched for “Twiks”. However, he was only found dead on Saturday, Russian media reported. The cat was located about a kilometer from Kirov train station and is believed to have recently undergone surgery. Temperatures were freezing on January 11 when the incident occurred.
Guidelines are under review
Russian Railways apologized for the incident and announced that it would review its policy. In the future, animals may only be handed over directly to station staff, who will then be tasked with finding the owner. In the meantime, or if the search is unsuccessful, the pets can be placed in a home.
For the shocked citizens, this may not go far enough. In any case, they have already started a resolution aimed at firing the employees. By Sunday afternoon, more than 280,000 signatures had been collected.
