In Uzbekistan, 19 children may have died after taking cough syrup from India. The public prosecutor’s office has started a procedure for the distribution of counterfeit medicines.

India is known as the pharmacy of the world and cheaply produces many medicines for poor countries. However, cough and cold syrups are now suspected of counterfeiting. In The Gambia, they are said to have caused acute kidney failure and the death of dozens of children. Shortly thereafter, another case occurred in Uzbekistan. According to the authorities, 19 children are said to have died after taking cough syrup.

Suspects in custody
According to the Uzbek secret service, the suspects are already in custody. Investigations against those responsible are ongoing at the company Quaramax Medical, which imported the cough syrup, and at the GmbH “Scientific Center for the Standardization of Medicines” in Uzbekistan. It is not clear how many people have been arrested. The procedure is carried out due to the distribution of counterfeit drugs.

According to the Indian Ministry of Health, it is in contact with the Uzbek authorities. The local drug authority allegedly inspected the production facility in the state of Uttar Pradesh and took cough syrup samples. A laboratory is responsible for the evaluation. The Indian company’s products are sold in India, Russia, Southeast Asia, countries in Africa and Latin America, among others.
