You know those constant taunts from a certain person? Little quips that come across as more or less subliminal – over and over again? Normally you don’t immediately notice it as such, but: this constant hacking of others is an extremely hurtful aggression – even if individually they are “micro”.
Hidden among perfectly normal conversation fragments, these verbal poison arrows suddenly shoot out and hit you deep in your self-esteem. “Unlike ‘classic’ aggression, micro-aggression usually happens much more subtly and covertly,” says psychotherapist Barbara Haid. At first, the victims are usually irritated: was that intentional? Or have I misunderstood that? Hardly likely. It’s just that sometimes the rhetorical archer doesn’t know what he’s doing.
