Major drug discovery – Ecuador: Ten tons of drugs seized!

Date:

Ecuadorian security forces have dealt a major blow to drug-related crime. The army said on Sunday evening that about ten tons of narcotics had been seized from an underground cellar.

The specific amount is yet to be determined, the report said. The Ecuadorian newspaper ‘El Universo’ reported on Monday that around 22 tons had been found, but this was not officially announced at the time. Accordingly, after several months of investigation, more than 150 forces arrived by land and air to carry out “the largest operation ever carried out in this country.”

The drugs were hidden in an underground cellar of a banana plantation in Los Ríos province. It was a warehouse for the distribution of the drugs to various ports from where they would be shipped to Europe, El Universo quoted the officer in charge of the operation.

Initials of European airlines on packages
Some brick-like blocks bore the initials of two European airlines. In addition to the drugs, which are suspected to be cocaine, guns, knives, ammunition and radios were also seized.

Ecuador is a major transit country for cocaine from Colombia, Peru and Bolivia that is smuggled to the United States and Europe.
