Wants to meet Prime Minister – Protest: Farmers block French nuclear power plant

Date:

Farmers’ anger is currently palpable in many places in Europe. There are demonstrations and blockades in many countries. After his inauguration, France’s new Prime Minister must now also tackle the problems of farmers. A nuclear power plant there is now blocked.

Ahead of a meeting of agricultural associations with France’s new Prime Minister Gabriel Attal on Monday, protesting farmers expanded their blockades in the country. In addition, several highways were closed on Monday near Toulouse in southern France, broadcaster France Info reported.

In the region, access to the nuclear power plant in Golfech was also blocked by farmers, as the newspaper “La Dépêche du Midi” reported. Farmers also occupy a toll booth on a highway near the Spanish border at Perpignan. There were also protests in Alsace on the German-French border near Lauterbourg.

Disease outbreak, water shortage and agricultural diesel
The farmers are calling for government help in the face of the EHD cattle disease outbreak and do not want to end their protest until the new prime minister listens to them locally. Numerous problems had already piled up among farmers: for example, the water supply for their farms in the south, where persistent drought is increasingly becoming a burden.

Farmers are preparing for longer blockades
As in Germany, this concerns, among other things, the price of agricultural diesel, energy costs in general and the income situation of farmers. Portable toilets, power generators and food supplies at the protest site suggested the blockades could continue for some time. Farmers spent the night at blockade points along the highways. The prefecture allowed police to use drones to monitor the situation.
