Jealousy and highly revealing cell phone messages escalated a marital spat in the Upper Austrian city of Wels. A 26-year-old Pole even broke his wife’s ring finger before locking himself in the toilet and police were only able to “calm” him with pepper spray.
Due to the serious relationship conflict, several police patrols had to move to Schubertstraße in Wels around 11.45 am on Friday. There, the 26-year-old suspect from Poland behaved so aggressively that the officers threatened to arrest him. After this also had no effect, the man only became more aggressive and tried to physically act against the police officers, who had to use their pepper spray.

The pepper spray only came into effect with a delay, which meant that the suspect had to be detained by four police officers. He tried to free himself with kicks and punches. By joining forces, it was finally possible to repair the 26-year-old and take him to hospital in Wels, where he again tried to injure a police officer by kicking his knee, but was unsuccessful.
After being treated in hospital, the Pole was transferred to the Wels police station. Three of the four police officers suffered minor injuries, but were able to continue on duty. The Pole’s wife also had to go to hospital. The man had broken her finger.
The motive was quickly clarified: the Pole had noticed that his girlfriend was still in close contact with her ‘ex’. He then snatched the phone from her hand, broke her ring finger, and locked himself in the toilet with the woman’s phone.
