Many of us do it every day, often for several hours. We’re talking about video games. According to the World Health Organization, this poses a health risk that has received little attention so far.
About one in five people in Austria – about 1.7 million people – have some form of hearing loss. This becomes especially problematic if left unnoticed or untreated, which can lead to isolation, depression and dementia. The elderly are particularly affected (30 percent of those over 60 and 50 percent of those over 65), but also children (one to two percent) and especially young people (15 percent). The World Health Organization (WHO) is now citing a previously largely ignored ‘noise source’ as a possible cause: video games.
