The Vienna Public Prosecutor’s Office has filed charges against another violent supporter of the terrorist militia “Islamic State” (IS). As the spokeswoman for the regional court, Christina Salzborn, announced upon request, a 19-year-old will have to answer before a jury on February 2 on charges including terrorist organizations. He is said to have carried out IS propaganda on his publicly visible Instagram account.
The indictment also includes other facts that clearly show that the young IS supporter has a penchant for violence. Accordingly, on May 29, 2023, he entered a bakery branch with a blank pistol and pointed it at a man. As a result, he and an accomplice fired the blank pistol in the direction of two people, one of whom suffered trauma and the other suffered an abrasion to the left forearm and tinnitus to the left ear.
Threatened with a blank pistol
Just four days earlier, the 19-year-old and an accomplice had threatened a man with an empty handgun in front of the Floridsdorf train station. There was said to have been an argument early in the morning, and eventually the IS sympathizer’s opponent had the deceptively real-looking weapon shoved in his face.
Man was knocked to the ground
He had already made it clear on May 22 that the 19-year-old did not necessarily need a weapon to hurt other people. According to the complaint, he allegedly knocked a man to the ground and then punched him in the face. The victim had to be treated in hospital with a broken nose, a bruised skull and whiplash.
Songs of praise and battle songs for IS
The 19-year-old of Bosnian descent is said to have published praise and battle songs for IS on Instagram since April 2022 and spread messages from radical Islamist preachers in which, for example, IS was described as a “fortress against the enemies” and glorified “martyrdom”. He also shared Instagram stories of two ISIS fighters. The trial lasts one day; if found guilty, the 19-year-old could face several years in prison.
