The bodies of two Tunisian teenagers have now been discovered on their way to Europe. They had hidden in the cold room of a ship to ‘cross the border illegally’.
This was announced by the regional director of the Tunisian Civil Protection, Mounir Rayani. The four young people were between 15 and 16 years old. Two of them were still alive when they were discovered on the ship and taken to a hospital in Tunis. One of the two young people also died on Wednesday, reports the Roman daily ‘La Repubblica’. The Tunisians had spent almost eight hours in the ship’s cold room, which was loaded with dates.
No residence permit in Italy
Last year, more than 150,000 migrants reached southern Italy after a sea voyage across the Mediterranean, including many from Tunisia. Because it is considered economic migration, people in Italy are not granted residence permits. The right-wing government led by Giorgia Meloni has already signed several cooperation agreements with Tunisia to stem the flow of migrants.
