Hurt because her boyfriend ended a long-term relationship via WhatsApp because of someone new, a Styrian woman (55) set fire to her ex-husband’s apartment building. She had to appear in court in Graz on Wednesday for arson.
Ending a relationship of several years via WhatsApp because a new woman is involved is certainly not the best approach, but the action with which the offended and angry abandoned woman takes revenge is even less so. The seriously ill woman from Styria (55) was taken to Lieboch by taxi. She left her cell phone and oxygen machine – which she needs due to a serious lung disease – in her apartment.
Played with cat for act
“We know from films and television that we can divert attention from ourselves as perpetrators,” prosecutor Hansjörg Bacher explains the approach. Before entering her ex-boyfriend’s gazebo, she played a game with the cat and smoked a cigarette. Shortly afterwards, she took out a lighter and set fire to the gazebo in which the couple spent beautiful moments in times of true love and ran away.
The perpetrator saw the house burn down
On the way to the stop, she fell so hard that she broke bones in her foot and tore ligaments. Nevertheless, she dragged herself 700 meters to a bus stop. She later told her sons and hospital staff that she had fallen while walking.
However, due to the actions of the fire brigade, the bus could no longer move – the flames had now spread throughout her ex-husband’s house. So she watched for three hours as eight fire brigades with 78 Florianis did their utmost to save the building. But it burned down completely in vain.
Fortunately, the neighbor noticed the inferno and kept knocking until the victim and his new girlfriend escaped outside. “If he had not reacted like that, we would now be in a murder case,” says judge Andreas Lenz, as the professional fire brigade rushes past the court honking its horn.
“Emotionally toxic act” after the end of love
“My client is highly sensitive. Before her, a world collapsed that degenerated into an emotionally toxic act,” her lawyer explained. Unexpected words for everyone involved, because the defendant vehemently denied this until the trial. She was at the crime scene, but she just wanted to talk. And now: “I would like to sincerely apologize to everyone. I loved him, it was so hard for me. “I just wanted to set the garden shed on fire and never thought it would end like this,” she admits.
Ultimately, the jury sentenced her to three years in prison, one year of which was unconditional. The verdict is not yet legally binding.
